We all know that some perfumes and foods contain aphrodisiacs. But what are aphrodisiacs, how do they influence our bodies and what are they mainly used for?

For me, it was a real surprise to learn that aphrodisiacs got their name after the Greek goddess Aphrodite. She was considered to be the standard of beauty and femininity.
Aphrodisiac is the substance, which stimulates sexual desire and energy. There’s also a common belief that the principles of imitative magic can be applied to libido and phallic-looking foods or other things can be used to increase sexual drive. Some scientists still argue that the effect of aphrodisiacs is a mere placebo effect, while the others have made a series of tests and have proved that some foods contain the substances necessary for normal body functioning and have a simulating and a revitalizing effect on the body.
What chemicals have an aphrodisiac effect?
The main decrease of libido in both men and women takes place when the level of testosteronein the body drops. The treatments, which aim at increasing the level of testosterone in the body, have shown a high effectiveness among older age groups, while among the younger people theeffect of such a treatment remains arguable.
Crocin is a natural chemical that can be found in crocus and gardenia. The usage of saffron – the spice got from the saffron crocus – helps to increase libido and can be used in all age groups.
Tests on the effects of alkyl nitrites (chemical substances, the first group of which consists of liquids mainly) have proven that alkyl nitrites have a strong stimulation power on libido.
The list of other chemical aphrodisiacs includes:
• Yohimbine
• Bremelatonide
• Melanotan II
• PEA (phenylethylamine)
• Other drugs
Some hard drugs also contain aphrodisiacs and other substances that affect our brain and hormonal system, that’s the use of drugs causes a feeling of happiness on the early stage, but then the damage to the brain and the body grows, short periods of happiness alternate with the hours of pain, neurasthenia and despair.
Sea food, some types of meat, herbs cereals and nuts also contain natural aphrodisiacs. The content of aphrodisiacs in them can be different and due to this the effect can be either slight and unnoticeable or quick and overwhelming.
The leaders among natural aphrodisiacs are:
• Gingko Biloba
• Lettuce
• Mucuna Puriens
• Oysters
• Saffron
• Horny Goat Weed
• Ginseng
They are the most frequently used components of the supplements used for different sexual disorders. Depending on the proportions and the formula, such natural supplements can help to cure different problems. Their complex action allows to cleanse the body and in many cases vitamins, minerals and nutrients are added to increase the effect.
